WASHINGTON — Free trade or protectionism?                  Posted: Oct. 28, 2007
Trade in the Spotlight: Issue Seen as Key One In Race for White House

The choice isn't quite as black-and-white as that in the race for the White House, but while the trade debate might be playing second fiddle to the Iraq War on the campaign trail, the issue of global commerce and the impact on American jobs and lifestyles will likely weigh heavily on voters thanks to a ballooning trade deficit, worries over the economy, a spate of recalled contaminated products from China and agitation on Capitol Hill to boost the value of China's currency. Further proof of the importance of trade and the economy to the race has come in the last two days. Democratic frontrunner Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton laid out her first major economic blueprint for union leaders and voters in Iowa on Monday, while nine Republican candidates discussed trade during their debate Tuesday in Dearborn, Mich. Clinton, who is facing pressure from rival Sen. Barack Obama on her trade record, said the North American Free Trade Agreement "is not working" and added that free trade pacts should be reassessed every five years, starting with NAFTA.   Read Article (pdf)

China's Companies Gain Word Class Status                                            Posted: Oct. 21, 2007

There’s Peril in the Parallels as China Takes a Top Spot
AS China’s ruling Communist Party gathered for its 17th National Party Congress this week, it could boast of something that would have been unthinkable in the days of Mao. China now leads the world in the number of publicly traded companies with market values of more than $200 billion. China passed the United States in that regard this year, with 8 companies among the 20 most highly valued ones in world stock markets. The United States has seven, Western Europe has four and Russia has one.

Luxury Jeans

Luxury Jeans are not Made in China                                Posted: Oct. 1, 2007

REBORN IN THE U.S.A.

Everything about the luxury denim industry, which began taking root here in 2000, has a fly-by-night feel, from the esoteric brand names — Antik, Nudie, Evisu, Monarch — to the sky-high prices, which have hit $1,000 a pair. But the new business is firmly rooted in this city’s rich blue-jean past, tapping into a vast network of experienced designers, sewers, laundry houses and fabric importers who gave birth to the first generation of designer denim in the late 1970s and ’80s — brands like Guess and Hilfiger — only to fall idle when such companies moved much of their manufacturing to China and Latin America.   ARTICLE
