Geometries: Circles

Halston used circles to construct one of his most ravishing and

poetic creations — the American Beauty Rose gown. Eight two-

layer pattern pieces were cut into along their radii, and then were

paired and joined, also at the radii. The pairs were placed at four

points on the body, equidistant from one another, before being

joined together. The resulting gown is a floating confection with the

clean, rigorous lines for which Halston is famous.

The use of circles in garment construction is a relatively recent

development. Isabel Toledo and Maria Cornejo have draped

conceptual and functional dresses using pure circles.

Yeohlee’s high fashion "transformer" is comprised of two layered,

circular pieces of gazar. The top layer has partially opened seams

that skim the hipbones, thus allowing the wearer to lift and reshape

the top layer.
