The great couturier Charles Frederick Worth was widely regarded as “an artist of luxury.” He created dresses that were expensive confections of lavish fabrics, trimmings, and embroidery for a clientele of wealthy Europeans and Americans. Worth proclaimed, “We live by and for luxury.”
