The rules of dress reached their apex during the period from the turn of the twentieth century until World War I. Fashionable women were required to change their clothes up to six times per day depending upon their social obligations. Some styles were governed by very specific rules. The tea gown, for example, was only worn for entertaining at home in the waning hours of the afternoon. It incorporated elements of both day and evening dresses and could be worn without a corset.
