Born in Italy, Elsa Schiaparelli (1890 – 1973) was one of the
most famous designers in Paris during the 1930s. She was heavily
influenced by the surrealist movement, and believed that fashion
was an art. Elsa Schiaparelli often collaborated with artists
such as Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau, and Alberto Giacometti.
Jean Cocteau is responsible for the witty design on this jacket
and his embroidered signature can be seen on its hem. This is an
extremely rare object: only three examples are known to exist. |
