Pierre de La Mésangère’s Journal was the most influential fashion magazine of its time. In forty-two years, Mésangère published an astonishing 3,624 fashion plates, many of which were reprinted in numerous publications throughout Europe.

The illustrator Louis-Marie Lanté (b. 1789) was prolific and worked for many French periodicals. By the 1830s fashion illustrations were a regular component to magazines and their format had become standardized, using recycled poses and bland settings.
