Henri Matisse, cover,
Minotaure (1933-1939), Paris: Albert Skira, 15 December 1936 Creative typographic treatments to the word “minotaure” were central to the cover art of this Surrealist journal, edited by E. Teriade. The mythic figure of the minotaure was adopted by Surrealists for its symbolic associations with movement, dynamism, breaking boundaries, and defying established laws. This cover was designed by Henri Matisse, but other contributors included Hans Bellmer, André Breton, Salvador Dalí, Paul Éluard, Alberto Giacometti, and Pablo Picasso. |
