Clothing Construction
The Birth of Sewing: Crafting Animal Skins
Thousands of years ago, the first form of clothing construction was probably the manipulation
of animal skins. California native Rick Owens, who now resides in Paris, is a cutting-edge
designer who has evoked the look of
prehistoric clothing, particularly when
crafting his sensuous and moodily beautiful
leather and fur garments.
Owens "deconstructs" furs, such as mink, to create jackets and coats that are typically
paired with louche, intricately cut tops and tightly-fitted trousers. He counterbalances his lean
silhouettes with sculptural details, such as sharply angled hemlines and standing collars.
For all their edginess, however, Owens’ furs are constructed using contemporary techniques.
