Introduction
Adaptation and Innovation
While American designers have mastered the art of creating innovative ready-to-wear,
some have also adapted select elements from French fashion, including couture
dressmaking techniques and clothing types, such as the "little black dress."
Pauline Trigère and James Galanos, for example, paralleled
their French counterparts in that they chose the highest quality
materials, draped and cut their designs themselves, and
consistently incorporated hand-finished details that are often
seen only from the inside. Yet the Trigère and Galanos dresses
are ready-to-wear garments that fuse quality with accessibility.
