“Ethnic” fashions
were extremely popular in the 1960s and ‘70s, when travel and
new ideologies fed the public’s fascination with the exotic. The
Algerian-born French designer Yves Saint Laurent was especially
influential, creating styles inspired by Africa, China, The
Middle East, and India, as well as Russia and Spain—cultures
long regarded as being on the periphery of Western Europe.
“Yves’ great talent was to find inspiration in these cultures
and to create modern clothes,” declared his business partner
Pierre Bergé. “He brought fashion into a wider cultural
context.”
