In 1965, a resurgence of "flapper" fashions embraced by Norman Norell and a number of his contemporaries led Marylin Bender of the New York Times to ask, "Is it Norell . . . or Vintage Chanel?"

Norell was known to begin research for a collection by combing through images of past fashions in magazines. Norell seemed to prefer the 1920s, which was perhaps not coincidentally the decade in which he began his career.
