In the early 1980s, the square attracted architecturally-inclined

fashion designers, such as Ronaldus Shamask and Yeohlee Teng.

Shamask’s leather halter dress is made of several geometric

pieces, yet its square shape becomes apparent in profile.

The rectangle has been predominant in traditional dressmaking

because its shape conforms to the elongated human form. The

square, however, is not congruent to the body and has been

creatively utilized by only a few designers. Claire McCardell’s

square-shaped evening skirt is made from taut cotton piqué, while

Halston’s poncho is cut from a single square of extra-wide silk

chiffon.
