Geometries: Francisco Costa - Meditations in Construction
One of the most innovative designers working in the United States today is Francisco Costa.
As the Women’s Creative Director of Calvin Klein Collection, he is responsible for producing
the
brand’s seasonal women’s collections, which set the tone for other Calvin Klein brands.
Costa
has not only adhered to the company’s long-held minimalist aesthetic but, at the same
time, has
literally reconfigured the look of contemporary fashion.
For his spring/summer 2009 collection, Costa crafted what journalist
Nicole Phelps described as "a meditation on . . . geometric shapes."
These dynamic pieces — some of which were transformed from flat,
two-dimensional objects into three-dimensional garments — were
created not just by pinning or draping, but also with smartly placed
folds and judicious cutting. Costa’s organic design process is
collaborative and requires several steps, as his most inventive
prototypes are refined and reworked in the Calvin Klein ateliers.
